Hooper's Handy Hints

  1. Stop cocks and valves often get very stiff and hard to turn. It is a good idea to close then open them all once a month to keep them in good working order and save calling us plumbers out.

  2. When you open any stop cock or valve open them fully then turn them back half a turn. This will prevent them from seizing up more often.

  3. If you have a modern push button or dual flush toilet that keeps running and then in turn keeps filling there may be some debris stuck in the flush pipe. Often it is the remains of toilet fresh blocks. Avoid putting them in the cistern unless they are the liquid type. To cure remove any debris and pour a few buckets of clean water in the cistern while flushing. This should clean any bits away.

  4. If you have a gas fire always make sure it is checked every year. Fitting a bird guard to the chimney will stop birds or even naughty squirrels getting in and causing a blockage.

  5. If this winter your fire keeps cutting out the flue may be blocked and potentially dangerous, exposing you to deadly carbon monoxide. Check your chimney today! All good Chimney Sweeps will be able to fit one.
